When will Mercadona open in Lanzarote?

Residents and visitors to Lanzarote have been asking us for more information as to what date Mercadona are expected to open their supermarkets in Lanzarote.

Back in November 2011 the company announced their intention to open three stores on the island by late 2012 / early 2013, according to this article published in Cronicas Lanzarote during July 2012, they will now open four stores in late 2013. Director of External Relations for Mercadona in Las Palmas, Arcadio Peñate Arbelo explained during the interview that opening delays can’t be attributed to the local government, they come from within Mercadona and relate to a mistake when they selected their locations.

Mercadona plan to open four establishments creating 250 jobs in Lanzarote, the first will be in the Parque Industrial del Puerto de los Mármoles in Arrecife, the second is also in Arrecife and will be situated in Argana Alta. The third supermarket will be located in Puerto del Carmen and the fourth in Playa Blanca.

The good news is that when they do open, there is a price policy in place to ensure their prices are the same throughout the islands, customers in Lanzarote will not pay any additional charges.

HiperDino Agree Equal Prices Between Eastern Canary Islands

HiperDino have signed an agreement with the Canarian Government to match prices on 12,000 products sold in the Las Palmas province.

HiperDino Lanzarote

Gustavo Matos, the Director General of Trade and Consumer Affairs for the Canary Islands thanked HiperDino for being the first to make the decision to equalize the price of products sold in supermarkets across the eastern islands and invited other companies to join the initiative.

The ceremony to seal the agreement was held in the Las Rotondas shopping centre in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura yesterday.

Javier Puga, the CEO of HiperDino commented that the supermarket chain is being faithful to their consumers, who have been loyal to their brand over the years, at a time when many people are going through a difficult economic situation.

Despite Lanzarote being the first port of call for shipping to the Canary Islands, the majority of goods are delivered to Las Palmas in Gran Canaria for distribution in the province. In the past this has meant that shopping in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura could cost more for the same items that are available in Gran Canaria, to cover the additional cost of shipping them on.

Winter Sales Start

The rebajas have started in the Canary Islands from today and will run until the 31st March 2013.

rebajas

According to a study completed by the Federación de Usuarios-Consumidores Independientes (FUCI) the average spend in this year’s winter sales by each Canarian will be 72 euros.

The President of the FUCI Gustavo Samavoa commented that this years spend is expected to be the lowest national level in recent years, more than 40 euros less than 2007, which is a true reflection of the plight that Spanish families are living in. He stressed that the whim to buy has gone, now many consumers wait for the sales out of necessity to buy at discounted prices, because they can’t afford the full price.

Key points from the survey included:

Two out of three people will buy during the sales period, of these 83% expect to spend less money compared to 17% who say they will spend more

67% of consumers prefer to buy textiles, as clothes often have the biggest discounts, 21% accessories, 7% new technology & 4% leisure

64% of shoppers don’t set a budget before leaving home, of those that do 81% said it was to control their spending and 19% said it was so that they didn’t forget anything

Madrid is expected to spend the most out of the Spanish regions with 95 euros, followed by Valencia with 87 euros. The Canaries were on the lower end of the scale at 72 euros and Castilla la Mancha 74 euros.

The FUCI recommends setting a budget and making a list of necessary purchases. Note that the discounts should not affect the quality so review the label to check the size, materials and washing treatments if buying clothes and look to see that the product carries both the original price and the discount price or the percentage of reduction from the original cost.

Agricultural Market in Tahiche

There’s a lovely, local food market held each week in Tahíche, I popped in yesterday to pick up some fresh fruit and vegetables.

Mercado agrícola en Tahiche todos los juevesMercado Agrícola Tahíche

The Mercado Agrícola is held in the Plaza del C.S.C. Santiago El Mayor where the sociadad is situated, for those of you that don’t know this area, follow the pink sign for the Escuela Universitaria de Turismo y centro. The plaza is situated on the corner of Calle Benito Pérez Caldos and Calle Miguel Hernández. It's not a huge market, there’s only a handful of stalls offering plenty of choice for locally grown fruit, vegetables, organic produce, wine, cheese, chutney, mojo sauces and fish.

Tahiche Market Local saucesTahiche Market Abels Cheeses

Although a gorgeous day yesterday, the market wasn’t very busy when I visited so I had time to chat with some of the stall holders who were very friendly. I couldn’t resist buying some cheese from Abel, he had varieties of local cheeses encased in gofio and pimienton, and some “fuerte” stronger cheeses all of which you could try before buying. Next visit I’ll have to get a jar of the Almogrote which is a paste made from cheese, peppers, olive oil and garlic, spread on a small crispy toast, it was delicious.

Tahiche Market Ecological ProduceTahiche Market Stawberries & chillies

The Finca Ecológica Tres Peñas stall was packed full of fabulous produce including lots of fresh herbs, I had to buy some of the strawberries as their sweet aroma attracted my attention whilst I selected 8 of the pican! (hot) chillies.

Tahiche Market Local ProduceTahiche Market Carmens Cheeses

And then I met Carmen on the other cheese stall who is my new best friend! Carmen also had some fabulous cheese from both Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, I tried one made with goat and sheep's milk from Fuerteventura which was excellent, Carmen speaks English so don’t be shy and ask her to sample some cheese, she also had local wines and honey for sale on her stall.

Tahiche Market FishTahiche Market Sergio Bread & cakes

The fish stall was popular although we’ve not been brave enough to buy the dried / salted fish before and this time was no exception. I did stop to buy some bread from Sergio on the Andy Brot stall where there was a good selection of bread and cakes for sale. Personally we like the muesli bread and the plaited fruit bread from this stall which is excellent toasted.

The market is here every Thursday from 09:00 to 14:00 so do pop over to support these local and traditional stall holders.

Mercadona Valterra

Finally it appears that the Mercadona supermarket chain now have planning permission to build in Arrecife, Lanzarote.

logo_mercadona_2012

Originally the company were looking to open in the Altavista area where Ikea and Lidl are situated, the actual site which has been granted planning permission by Arrecife council is in Valterra. The supermarket building will have a construction of 1,500m2 spread over two floors, a basement and parking for 234 vehicles, the entry and exit to the car park will be situated on different streets.

Mercadona are expected to open this store in 2014, although the building license granted has a duration of two years.

Manuel Fajardo, the Mayor of Arrecife commented that “the Government group can’t help but feel satisfied. In the first place for completing a record that was already started. But also a vindication for the citizens by responding well to the day to day issues that are of concern for our residents”. The Mayor’s view is that the work could involve companies based on the island with the consequent benefits for the population and a much needed economic boost. In that sense José Montelongo is confident that Mercadona will look to to source their personnel from Arrecife.

The permission was made public yesterday, 22nd May 2013 earning the council an income of 158,000 euros for the license fee.

Mercadona first expressed an interest in opening three stores in Lanzarote back in late 2011 which were expected to open by early 2013. A statement from Mercadona in mid 2012 explained that the company had made a mistake in selecting their locations which in turn led to opening delays and that they still planned to open four stores in Lanzarote, two of which would be based in the capital, one in Puerto del Carmen and another in Playa Blanca.

We sadly learnt earlier this summer that the Lansaldo Fair wasn't going to take place this year despite of its popularity. However, a new campaign is being organised by the Cámara de Comercio, Cabildo de Lanzarote and Ayuntamiento de Arrecife to encourage shopping in the capital of our island at discounted prices.

stockazo 2013

The new event is called "Stockazo" and it will take place from 10:00 to 21:00h next Friday and Saturday and with a different format: instead of having all the participants under one roof, you'll have to go around the participating outlets yourself.

As usual, there will also be loads of activities to keep the kids busy like:

- 6 bouncy castles in Calles Real, Plazuela, Canalejas, Alférez Cabrera Tavío, La Plazuela and Parque Islas Canarias)

- 2 ludotecas in Calle Real and Parque Ramírez Cerdá

- various workshops and animation shows.

- Children's Theater "Ismaelillo" (Little Ismael) at 17:30 on Friday in front of the Old Cabildo and on Saturday at La Plazuela.

And this is the entertainment programmed for the adults:

Friday, the 8th of November:

At 12:30 in various locations around the city center - "Performance", a showcase of aerobics and artistic movements

At 19:00 at Calle León y Castillo, in front of the Old Cabildo - Concert by Dúo Sergio y Yoriell. This duet are residents in Lanzarote and they play a mix of traditional Cuban song and Latin pop

Saturday, the 9th of November:

From 13:00 onwards in various locations around the city center - Street Theather "Somos" (We are).

At 18:30 in La Plazuela - DJ Manel Ruiz will do his best to get the party started

At 20:00 in at Calle León y Castillo, in front of the Old Cabildo - The music will continue at the hands of Doctor Ye-ye, a Canarian-New Zelander band with cover versions as diverse as the range of instruments and nationalities of their components.

Finally bars, coffee places and restaurants in the area will be joining in offering special breakfast, menus and tapas deals.

There are more of 100 participating shops, the list and addresses of which you can find on the event's website: www.stockazo.com.

You can either search them by category or by zooming into the map and clicking on each icon to find out more about each shop.

Unfortunately the website is only available in Spanish and also, the discounts offered are not specified. But it sounds like a good excuse to go and browse around your favourite establishments in Arrecife to get your Christmas shopping started or even treat yourself to something nice. And who knows, you might even discover your new shops!

Sunday Opening

It’s official, following an announcement in the Boletín Oficial de Canarias, shops within the historic centre of Arrecife can now open on Sundays and fiesta holidays.

Historic_Centre_of_Arrecife_Map

Previously, the capital of Lanzarote has been unable to open 7 days a week, unlike the tourist resorts of Costa Teguise, Puerto del Carmen and Playa Blanca, apart from a special concession in the weeks before Christmas.

The historic centre of Arrecife is now considered a tourist area due to the influx of tourists from visiting cruise ships and has been granted permission for shops to open for extended hours by the Ministry of Commerce for the Government of the Canary Islands. The new opening hours are restricted to stores with a shop floor space exceeding 300 m2.

The original proposal for extended opening hours was submitted on the 15th February 2013, this was subsequently amended to include just the commercials within the Historic Area of Arrecife on the 14th May.

The Casco Histórico includes the cultural interest sites of Castillo San José, Castillo San Gabriel, Iglesia de San Ginés de Clermont, Puente de las Bolas, Casa de los Arroyo and various buildings (6, 12, 23 & 25) in calle Léon y Castillo. The map shown above was included with the ruling and confirms the area considered to be the Historic Centre.

For us it’s a shame to see another bit of the old traditions being lost, we like the fact that it’s not a 24/7 lifestyle here in Lanzarote. What do you think?

Lanzarote Natural is a family company founded by Daniel Lasso who’s grandfather Domingo Lasso was an entrepreneur by establishing the “Almacenes Lasso” in Arrecife back in 1922.

logolanzarotenaturalr

You might have seen the Lanzarote Natural product range for sale in some of the wineries on the island including cosmetics: moisturising creams, handmade soaps, bath salts and food products: mainly salt.

These products are made with local produce like aloe vera, volcanic sand, cactus, wine, goat’s milk and of course, salt. In fact their gourmet “Flor de Sal Volcánica” range was successfully launched last year. It includes plain, red and green mojo, garlic paprika and coriander flavoured salts in presentations ranging from 40g to 160g.

Lanzarote_Natura_Espiritu_del_AloeLanzarote_Natura_Espiritu_del_VinoLanzarote_Natural_Leche_de_Cabra

Products can be bought online, at some wineries in Lanzarote, in chemists in mainland Spain and also, they are exported to countries like Germany, Italy, Portugal and France.

I haven’t tried them myself (yet!) but I have to say I love the company’s philosophy... and their logo which is made out of a vine and an aloe plant!

But Lanzarote Natural is not only about promoting local produce. They are very committed with promoting the traditions and activities of the island and in particular of their municipality with different projects and social commitments.

And here is where the latest project comes in. Under the name of “Vive Tinajo”, meaning “Live Tinajo” as in experience the place is in its very early stages. It basically and open initiative directed to entrepreneurs, self-employed people, companies and individuals alive that are related to Tinajo somehow and want to give the area a push to make it more attractive from its many angles: cultural, social, sports, etc. The initial cost of the project has been fully funded by the R+D department of Lanzarote Natural. “We are overwhelmed with the response and the interest that people have shown”, Daniel Lasso has told us.

Actually next Monday 20th of January at noon there is a presentation of the project at the Gran Hotel in Arrecife. “It’s more like a workshop than a presentation” confesses Daniel “just to get the ideas out there and get ourselves organised. Everybody interested is welcome”.

You can follow the updates on this project on their Facebook page Vive-Tinajo and connect with the event itself Presentation of Vive Tinajo.

40 Lanzarote Natural

And this is not all. To celebrate founder and managing director’s Daniel’s 40th birthday next Friday AND for one day only, an unprecedented discount of 40% will be applied on the 24th of January 2014 for orders placed online at www.lanzarotenatural.com. An opportunity to get your favourite products (or try them for the first time like me!) at a great price! Don’t miss it! You can also place orders on that date by telephone 315 245 540.

We wish Daniel Lasso a very happy birthday and wish the Vive Tinajo initiative the success that it’s passion deserves.

Established in 2009, Maceys are situated on the high street in Tías, which is a central location for residents and visitors to stock up on food, toiletries and gift items that you miss from home.

The difference with Maceys is one that you can taste, as this supermarket only stocks British sourced goods, as opposed to Spanish made British goods. Although they can look the same from the branding, they are a different recipe to the ones we know and love. A good example of this is Cadbury’s chocolate and one of the reasons why their range of confectionery is very popular with residents.
